With the General Assembly held on 12th April, 2019, Hokkaido University International Students’ Association (HUISA) got its new executive committee. This year as well, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Van, from Vietnam, will lead the executive committee. Van was re-elected as the President for new tenure 2019-2020. With her leadership, this new committee is willing to work hard for the benefits and in support of students in Hokkaido University.
We would like to introduce our new HUISA executive committee members. They hail from different parts of the world and are equally excited to work for international students.
Nguyen Thi Thuy Van (President 2019-2020; 2018-2019, Vietnam)
My name is Van Nguyen, a 4th year student of the Modern Japanese Studies Program. This year I am very lucky to be selected again as the President of HUISA. I entered HUISA 3 years ago as a public relation officer. From that time on, I was able to make lots of new friends from different countries and gain valuable working experience in an international organization. Having the honor to lead the association one more year, I along with my team will try our best to create a more interactive and interesting environment for international students in Hokkaido University. Other than homework, research, papers and part-time jobs; I believe that extracurricular activities are also very important because they help foreign students balance academics life in Japan. Hopefully participating in HUISA events will become one of the students’ priority this year April/2019-March/2020.
Sivakumar Gowthaman (Vice President, Sri Lanka)
My dear friends, I am Gowtham from Sri Lanka, the country that is known as the pearl of the Indian ocean. Currently, I am pursuing my doctoral degree in Graduate school of Engineering, Hokkaido university, Japan. From my childhood, I am much more interested in involving extracurricular activities and volunteer works in addition to my responsibilities, which possibly has led me to get into HUISA in 2018. I freshly joined HUISA in April-2018 as the secretary of social welfares and cultures and functioned at the best until April-2019. And this time, I am continuing my service in HUISA as the vice president (2019-2020). Undoubtedly, HUISA functions as a crucial platform to the international students in several ways, and it is my great pleasure working with many active volunteers from different countries. In brief: “Let’s make it better for tomorrow, that’s what the journey is all about”.
Nour Chebbi (General Secretary, Tunisia)
My name is Nour Chebbi and I am originally from Tunisia. I am a MC1 student in the Human Mechanical Systems design department. I am currently the General Secretary of the HUISA. I love travelling, arts, sciences and cultural exchange and I have lived in 3 different countries so far: Tunisia, China (Beijing for four years) and Japan (Tokyo for one year and now Sapporo). Sharing is a wonderful thing, and that’s the main reason why I joined the HUISA. I would like to share my experience, learn more from this very international environment and contribute to making the student life in Hokkaido as enjoyable as possible. I am looking forward to our future events!
Fernando Ursine (Treasurer, Brazil)
Hello, I’m Fernando, from Brazil. Currently I’m a 3rd year Modern Japanese Studies Program student at Hokkaido University. My hobbies are biking around, take pictures of random things, read and cook. I joined HUISA Executive Committee so to be able to do something for the international student community in our university. From 2013 to 2016, I served as a member in the Students’ Union of my former university and I would like to use this experience to help HUISA. I hope we can help you all enjoy a great time both in university and in your daily lives in Japan.

Hamdiye Ece (Secretary for Culture and Social Welfare, Turkey)
This is Hamdiye Yadigar Ece or just Yadi which is created by my dad as nickname. 2nd year PhD student in organic synthesis at Graduate School of Chemical Sciences and Engineering from Istanbul/Turkey. I am kind of talkative and out-going person, but behaving like shy and silent at lab as
usual or my assumption is like this. Basically you can call as ‘lab mouse’ cause I spend more than 14 hours at there . Base on my lab life, I would like to do something different and HUISA is the chance for me to experience that. I am especially interested in culture and history. During my term, I would focus on events about cultural experience.
Amagu Clement (Secretary for Recreation and Sports, Nigeria)
Hello..!!! I am Amagu Clement from Nigeria. I am M1 student in the Laboratory of Rock Mechanics, Division of Sustainable Resources Engineering. I came to Hokudai 6 months ago, and fell in love with HUISA after I joined 41st Sapporo International Night (SIN) and International Culture Festival (Bunkasai-2018) organized by HUISA. I felt very honored and privileged to be part of such a prestigious program because those prodigious performances from wide range of international cultures and the interactions were unforgettable. I extemporaneously decided to be a part of such eminent student organization which not only promote your well-being of students but also provides a platform for students from different countries to interact with each other, and opportunities for recreation and a break from the tedious research life by organizing various interesting events. By being a member of the HUISA Execom 2019-2020, I would actively participate in the activities of HUISA, to maintain that core interaction and understanding among international students. Therefore, let’s participate, organize and arrange unforgettable events for ourselves, that we may enjoy and make beautiful memories together in Hokudai life. Thanks!
